About Rehabilitation

In addition to electrodiagnostic services, EMG and Rehabilitation Physicians also sees patients for diagnostic evaluation and treatment of a variety of conditions including neck pain, back pain, peripheral joint and limb pain, both acute and chronic and including sports-related injuries. Neck pain and back pain are not uncommonly associated with involvement of the nerves as they exit the spine (pinched nerve in the neck or back) and these conditions also are often responsive to measures which may be provided by physiatrists. Neck pain, back pain and pain involving the major joints of the body are frequently associated with osteoarthritis for which physical medicine and rehabilitation treatment may be appropriate. Following evaluation, our physicians will recommend and coordinate appropriate treatment as needed using a holistic approach which also focuses on preventive measures.

Frequently Asked Questions: Rehabilitation Medicine

Learn more about physical medicine rehabilitation below.

What is a physiatrist?

Rehabilitation physicians are experts in treating nerve, muscle, and bone injuries or illnesses. Rehabilitation physicians have completed training in the medical specialty physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) and are often referred to as physiatrists. Physiatrists also receive extensive training in electrodiagnostic medicine (EMG and nerve conduction testing).

To learn more about physiatry generally, visit the website for one of our governing organizations, American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (AAPM&R).

I have a herniated disc. Do I need surgery?

Rehabilitation physicians treat a wide range of problems from sore shoulders to low back pain. Their goal is to decrease pain and enhance performance without surgery. Rehabilitation physicians take the time needed to accurately pinpoint the source of an ailment. They then design a treatment plan that is directed at your specific diagnosis. By providing an appropriate treatment plan, rehabilitation physicians help patients stay as active as possible at any age.

I think I have carpal tunnel. How is this diagnosed?

Numbness and tingling in the hands is frequently associated with carpal tunnel. This may be confirmed by nerve conduction testing and electromyography which will also exclude other possible causes for the hand symptoms such as a pinched nerve in the neck or at the elbow.

My doctor told me I have neuropathy related to my diabetes. What does this mean?

Diabetic neuropathy is a variety of symptoms and syndromes related to nerve function and diabetes. This can show up as a lost of sensation in limbs, poor motor control, and pain. Your doctor may have referred you for rehabilitation medicine and an EMG to confirm this neuropathy, which is the medical term for damage or dysfunction of the nerves. An EMG can help confirm the neuropathy and measure the extent of the damage, while rehabilitation medicine can help reduce some of the symptoms and maintain current motor function.
