What is a Physiatrist?

Rehabilitation physicians are experts in treating nerve, muscle, and bone injuries or illnesses. Rehabilitation physicians have completed training in the medical specialty physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) and are often referred to as physiatrists. Physiatrists also recieve extensive training in electrodiagnostic medicine (EMG and nerve conduction testing).

Rehabilitation physicians treat a wide range of problems from sore shoulders to low back pain. Their goal is to decrease pain and enhance performance without surgery. Rehabilitation physicians take the time needed to accurately pinpoint the source of an ailment. They then design a treatment plan that is directed at your specific diagnosis. By providing an appropriate treatment plan, rehabilitation physicians help patients stay as active as possible at any age.

I have a herniated disc. Do I need surgery?

Most of our patients improve without requiring surgery. Depending upon your specific condition, our physicians use a variety of conservative treatment options that are frequently successful.

 

I think I have carpal tunnel. How is this diagnosed?

Numbness and tingling in the hands is frequently associated with carpal tunnel. This may be confirmed by nerve conduction testing and electromyography which will also exclude other possible causes for the hand symptoms such as a pinched nerve in the neck or at the elbow.

 

I’ve been told that I have spinal stenosis. can this be treated without surgery?

Not all patients with spinal stenosis require surgical decompression. Many of our patients with spinal stenosis improve without requiring surgery.

 

Should I require physical therapy, is it covered by my insurance?

Most insurance policies cover physical therapy although you should verify the extent of your coverage with your insurance provider.

 

Prior to my seeing one of your physicians, I was unaware that your specialty existed. In retrospect, I wish that I had been referred to your office sooner.

Since a physician referral is necessary, your doctor may have already forwarded pertinent information to us by using our one-step referral form. If you have not yet been given a specific appointment time, you may call us at our Kettering location (937.395.8666) or at our Sycamore location (937.384.8797). Please be sure to provide us with any necessary information relative to your healthcare insurance and also inform us if testing is being done as a result of your involvement in an auto accident or work-related injury.
